One of Nathan and Paul's (my husband) favorite activity to do together is to watch Man vs. Wild. For those of you who don't know what this is, it's kind of like a survival show where this guy, Bear Grylls "survives" in various wilderness destinations. He does cool stuff like making shelters out of tree sap or braiding a rope out of cricket legs.
Anyway, Nate and Paul call this "The Man Show", and it's a BIG DEAL in our house. When it's on, they cuddle on the couch (very manly) and burp and fart and do other man stuff. Okay, not really. But I LOVE that they are connecting so well over this particular show. It's kind of their "thing" and it's really cute in a way! I don't remember watching any type of media with my dad (who was going through his medical residency when I was a kid!). Well, that's not true. We did watch Moulin Rouge together when it came out in the theatre (I literally almost died of embarrassment!) So, I think it's WONDERFUL that Paul and Nate have this Man show together.
Okay, I know this is a really old picture (Nathan is 2 years old in this one)!, but it's so darn cute. They are watching TV together and even wearing matching Ireland football shirts!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
So, when I came downstairs tonight Nathan had built this very elaborate structure out of couch cushions, pillows, blankets, legos, and Hannah's rocking horse.
"Nathan, what IS that?" I asked
"It's my trap!", he said. "I'm making a trap for bugs. And for whales, squid, and bees" (Pretty impressive in my opinion)
Then he proceeded to pull out this giant plastic bug toy we happen to have.
"AWESOME!", he exclaimed "I caught one! I'll just eat the legs, wings, and antennae now. I'll save the body for later."
Okay, ew, ew, ew!!! I totally don't get boys, but I love that this show also sparked his imagination of surviving in the wilderness. So, thanks Bear Grylls!
Now I have to think of what "Girl show" me and Hannah can watch together. America's Next Top Model? hmmm, probably not!!!

dancing with the stars for you and hannah!
ReplyDeleteOh bear- every once and a while, my husband and I enjoy watch Man vs. Wild just to see what he kills and eats :) Hmmm... a Girl show... Gilmore Girls? Or how bout the 6 hour pride and prejudice marathons?!
ReplyDeleteAll the females in my family watch Top Chef- we don't look, one sister doesn't even eat meat and we still love it. And American Idol, but don't admit that to anyone.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny! My husband LOVES that show!
ReplyDeleteIt is the only time we ever fight over the remote. ha ha. ;-)
First off, I don't think Man vs. Wild is exclusively a 'man show'. I really enjoy watching it and I've actually found some practical application of the things he teaches on the show....ha ha, and no I did not wring out the liquid in elephant dung to avoid dehydration or possibly death. Some of the extreme things can be necessary in the wild but he says a lot of simple things that make backpacking easier.
ReplyDeleteOk, and second, I was also there when we went to watch Moulin Rough with Dad and I'm not sure why but I didn't really understand the implications of his presence so I wasn't embarrassed at all. It was only until a few years later when I watched the movie again and remembered....wait a minute, I saw this for the first time with my dad....that's awkward...
And thirdly, I think you and Hannah should watch Biggest Looser together. Not only is it an awesome and motivating show, but then Hannah can learn how to turn into Jillian when she gets older.
That is so sweet! He's lucky to have a dad that is willing to spend that "man time" with him.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember watching shows really with my dad, but I do remember him reading Little House on the Praire with us girls all gathered around him. Time matters, it really does.
ReplyDeleteI love Man vs. Wild...even if he does have a lot of help surviving! I can never watch when he eats bugs and eyeballs and other things that SHOULD NOT BE EATEN! That's so adorable that "man time" involves cuddling! : )
